Car Service Intervals Explained — UK Guide

17 May 20265 min read

"How often should I service my car?" is one of the most common questions we get. Here's a clear UK answer.

The three service levels

  • Interim service — every 6 months or 6,000 miles. Oil, oil filter, basic checks. About £100–£170.
  • Full service — every 12 months or 12,000 miles. Everything in an interim plus air filter, pollen filter, more thorough inspection. About £180–£280.
  • Major service — every 24 months or 24,000 miles. Everything above plus spark plugs (petrol), fuel filter (diesel), brake fluid, and often coolant. About £320–£500.
  • (Prices vary by make and model.)

    Whichever comes first

Service interval is whichever comes first — mileage or time. A low-mileage car that mostly does short trips actually needs servicing on the time interval because oil degrades from heat cycling and condensation, not just mileage.

Will independent servicing void my warranty?

No. Under UK Block Exemption rules, you can have your car serviced at any qualified independent garage without affecting your manufacturer warranty — as long as the right parts and procedures are used and the service book is stamped.

    Special items beyond the service

  • Cambelt / timing belt — every 60,000–100,000 miles depending on car. Critical: a snapped belt destroys the engine. Often quoted separately.
  • Brake fluid — every 2 years
  • Coolant — every 5 years or per manufacturer
  • Spark plugs — every 30,000–60,000 miles for most modern petrol cars
