Engine Warning Light On? A Practical Diagnostics Guide

17 May 20265 min read

The amber engine warning light is one of the most misunderstood symbols on the dashboard. Here's what to do when it comes on.

Amber vs red — read the colour

  • Amber/yellow steady — a fault has been detected. Drive gently to a garage. Don't panic.
  • Amber flashing — a misfire or serious engine issue. Stop driving as soon as safe.
  • Red — pull over now. Do not continue.
  • Common causes

The check engine light can be triggered by hundreds of fault codes, but the everyday culprits are:

  • Loose or faulty fuel cap (yes, really — tighten it and drive 50 miles)
  • Faulty oxygen (lambda) or MAF sensor
  • Misfire from worn spark plugs or coils
  • Catalytic converter degradation
  • EGR valve sticking (diesels)
  • DPF blockage (diesels driven mainly short trips)
  • What NOT to do

  • Don't let someone "just clear the code" without diagnosing the cause. The light will come back, usually worse.
  • Don't ignore it for weeks — a misfire can wreck a catalytic converter (£800+).
  • What a proper diagnostic looks like

At Woodseer Autos we plug in a professional scanner, read live sensor data alongside the codes, and check related parts before quoting. The light is a symptom — the root cause is what matters.

Most diagnostic checks take 30–60 minutes. We'll explain in plain English what's going on and quote before any repair.
